hi, I'm Jed.

I'm a 4th year student studying computer science at University of Calgary. I like building things that real people end up using. Right now I'm looking for a Spring/Summer 2027 software engineering internship.

(I wrote this site by hand. no templates. please be nice about the CSS)

money is stored as BigDecimal, never double. no rounding errors on my watch

Expense Tracker

Java 17 · REST API · zero dependencies · 2026

A REST API for tracking spending, written in plain Java with no external libraries at all. I used the JDK's built-in HTTP server and wrote my own small JSON parser. Expenses save to a CSV file with atomic writes, so a crash halfway through a save can't corrupt your data.

It also has a web page built entirely in Java with no JavaScript, just HTML forms. It uses the Post/Redirect/Get pattern so refreshing doesn't add the same expense twice, and it escapes user input so nobody can inject code. It has filters by category and date, monthly summaries, and a test suite.

Each layer only talks to the one below it, so features like automatic categorization and spending analytics can be added without reworking existing code.

OMG Gaming Platform

Java · sockets · client-server · Mar–Apr 2025

A multiplayer board game platform where several players connect to one host server and play together live. I built the networking layer, using sockets and client-server messages to keep everyone connected and in sync for the whole game.

-rw-r--r-- is now a language I speak fluently

POSIX Permissions Access Resolver

Python · Linux security · Oct 2026

A Python tool that answers one question: can this user open this file? It checks the owner, group and other permission bits the same way Linux does when it decides whether to allow access.

built because my friends and I spend 20 minutes deciding every single time

Forkast in progress

web app · Calgary only (for now) · 2026

A web app that decides what you should finally eat when you're standing in a food court. It only covers Calgary for now.

I'm competing at Ventures Hackathon 2026. I'll post whatever I build here afterward, bugs included.

experience

2025–now Club Member, The Cybersecurity Club
I attend club meetings when I can. Hoping to make more friends.
2023–now Footwear Lead, Under Armour, Rocky View AB
I sell shoes to people in order to pay off my student loans. Along the way:
  • Lead a team of 10 associates. Better stockroom organization made the department 15% more efficient and cut restock time.
  • Top footwear sales in the region for 7 months in a row, from studying sales trends and rearranging the floor layout to match.
  • Train new associates on inventory systems and sales procedures. Onboarding is now 20% faster.
  • Brought new sales and customer service practices to the whole store, projected to raise annual sales 10%.
